I again everybody. I'd like to meet whoever is up for it. I'm a bit sad because it will be my B-day and my partner is in the States now & will not be there. It would be great to hang out with a few other Melissa fans for awhile :D

I just wanted to ask you that if someone going to the show lives in Berlin? I would need a place to sleep after the show (I think hotel would be too expensive for me but I could pay something for a place to bunk). I really want to go to Melissa's concert, it has been my dream for long time. Now I will get that money and fly, hopefully to Berlin.

:welcome: everyone :)

bouldermnts we will cheer you up :)
Besides Melissa's concert - what a b-day present :)

Mindie-mouse I'm aslo not from Germany, and I'm currently looking for a place to sleep for me and my gf. Hotels are way to expensive and I will be first time in Berlin (I will be staying couple of days after the concerts) and I want to see the city, not sit in the chair in the hotel room ;-)
If you wont find some place to sleep, we could search together or I could send you some links to that places I found and that are cheaper than hotels; what price will be ok for you ?

Cheers!

Oxenberg, this is kinda great site: http://www.couchsurfing.org/about.html
There you can find a place to sleep for free :D
And I think really crappy and cheap hostel can be great but it just a last choice if anything else doesn't come up.

Hi Oxenberg, Thanks! That sounds great. Yes, an amazing B-day event! Unfortunately, I am not close with anyone in Berlin. I will be staying here the night: http://www.meininger-hostels.com It is a newer hotel/hostel right next to the Hauptbahnhof. The hostel portion looks VERY nice w free breakfast. However, I always avoid them when I'm with my partner. You can often find discounted hotels on the Deutschebahn website: http://www.bahn.de/p/view/index.shtml
Looking forward to meeting everyone. On another note: I'm going to buy tickets to see Melissa in Denver in one hour. Yaaaa!

Berlin has changed a bit, no. Nice older ones are still coming to Germany. Our son saw Bob Dylan in Bonn a few summers past. I hope she left time to take her children down the Rhein, so beautiful.

This was my first Melissa Etheridge concert and I am really impressed!
She was just amusing, likeable, deep-realxed and professional.
This was worth the long car journey, with pleasure again. :peace:

here's the video, hope it's fine to post the link

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGSIapDt9uA

Quality isn't best, but it's my first video with my camera and 2nd video editing :S

When she introduced the song, she was like, this is going to be a world premiere, a song she's never played live before, and that it's a bonus track, so some might not know it, but some might.. but fans asked her to sing it so..
I was thinking to myself .. OMG! She is going to sing The heart of a woman! And she did.. so amazing!!!

Re: June, 30th, Berlin Astrahaus

Postby poetdownhere on Thu Jul 01, 2010 3:40 pm

first let me start with an apology to the German woman behind me: Obviously videoing Melissa is more important than living the moment and savouring the music. Silly me, I thought a concert is all about watching the artist and responding to her/him as and when...

Silly me too, that I even considered giving a young boy the chance to be in the front row for a bit. Your 80 kg (or was it more?) of anger nearly squashed the little guy. I had to tell him to leave, as the 3 (!!!!) of us could not guarantee his safety. And that only because you felt your attempt to video a song was thwarted by an act of kindness and humanity of one fan (me) towards a totally unknown young fan (the boy in question). Maybe if you concentrated more on the what Melissa has to say (listen to the LYRICS of her songs!!!! LISTEN to the beautiful words she shares with us in concert) you'd be less concerned about a stupid video and more concerned about the reckless, stupid and irresponsible behaviour you displayed last night in Berlin!!!!

So, rant out of the way. The concert.

I ended up standing on the front row, next two two incredibly nice Dutch fans and of course a newbie, my friend from Germany. First the venue ... the venue, man you should have seen the place. Today I went on an alternative walking tour and we passed the Astra. This place is the hub of the alternative Art scene in Berlin and the Grafitti to be found all over the place is some of the finest in Berlin, apparently. You'd think the venue was a dump on the outside, in fact it was really nice on the inside. Way to go Melissa, a great choice of venue; it fits my filosophy.

The concert: Melissa wore leather ... Now I am straight as a chain-link fence and do not fancy or hero-worship Melissa, but I like leather!! So that was a good start. M clearly was in the mood for a good show. Not as much giggling going on as in Amsterdam, but in a good mood.

Solid start.

Similar features: problems with the keys. They weren't working so the tune was definitely missing something. We made up for it by singing loudly. Luckily the problem was fixed, almost without any panic, half-way through the song.

chrome-plated heart: I did my first ever poetry analysis / essay on this song. It has a very special place in my heart. It was the start of me understanding the mechanics of poetry and got me an A+ :D so too the song last night:lots of voices singing along.

Heart of a woman - little eeks wow! moment.
Heaven on Earth - great!!

The speech before TESTIFY was very moving. The girl I was with is from East Germany, and we had been talking about the life of her parents before the wall fell, and about how things have changed. It was sweet and moving to hear M talking about the moment the wall came down and she was asked to sing in the massive concert. She felt proud and it showed, she said what can be achieved by just us. By us, being good and decent and caring (TAKE NOTE GERMAN WOMAN from 1st 2 paragraphs!!!). The song was a fab rendition and clearly meant a lot to some of the German fans who had been there, at the concert in 1989 when that wall came down. Wouldn't have missed the concert, if only for this section.

Indiana - my teary moment. I love that song. I live that song!

bring me some water - it was hot in the Astra. It was hot in Berlin and even hotter in the building (and that is without M flirting with whomever she could find haha). M took out a bottle and wanted to drink, I gestured we were hot and could do with a drink... she then proceeds to chuck her whole bottle out over the audience. ping-pong bass player (ha, I really like him - a cool dude like him can come by my window any time) then took out his 1.5 ltr bottle which I shouted for: we want more more more... M gets another one of her bottles and asks her stagehand how many she can go through ... giggle .. and she showers the audience again. Then she says... 'yeah that's what I do ... I bring some water sometimes'. Spontaneous and fun start to one of her best songs.

We are the ones - I was disappointed in a way to not get gently we row, as I happen to cry every time I hear that song ... soooooooo beautiful but I knew from Amsterdam how well We are the Ones works. Because there was a one meter gap between the fence and the stage, M had to lie flat on her belly to reach the fans. Two young german lassies were just about launched by their mates so they could touch M, on our side I savoured my hand in hers (telepathically thanking her for 23 years of magic), and then grabbed someone behind me to go-go-gadget her hand so she could have her touchy-feelie moment too. It was a fine ending to the show: one of giving and sharing.

I really enjoyed the show and chucked lots of energy in it; got the bruises to show for it.

I first saw Melissa in 1987 (?) when she performed as supporting act for Huey Lewis and the News, in Ahoy rotterdam- I can't remember much of the HL and the News show, but I ran to the record store the day after to buy that red thing with the funny looking woman with the cool bowler hat. She's never been out of my life since. Much has changed but one thing stays the same: the integrity of the person, her loyalty to her beliefs and us; her truth towards and in her music. I am mighty proud to call myself a fan! Thanks Melissa. Here's to the future.

@poetdownhere I think I know whom you are talking about, but that person was not filming or taking photos as far as I could see. Those were a bit more right I think.

Me and my gf and two other girls tried to remain sitting on the floor as long as we could.. we were thinking as soon as you stand up (I think you were sitting with your back to the fence quite long or?) we will have to :) and it was like that. Then somewhen ppl from behind and the sides started to almost fall over us, so we had to stand up. We ended up separated by some people who came pushing from behind, but found ourselves again :)

I hate pushing, have done bad experiences in other concerts, try to go to seated shows only lately.. I was worried the pushing would be so bad I would have give up and leave to the back or the sides, but after the first song everything kinda settled down, until the two you mention just squeezed in. I ended up myself a bit more behind (6th row?) than where I was in the beginning (4th? and thx to the prio entry!) because of them, but it didn't really matter, the view was anyway fine. Really hats off to those who manage to STAY first row.

You are right, concert is about enjoying (didn't understand it either, some ppl in front of me were filming and taking photos the whole time, I felt already bad about 1 video!) and the atmosphere was incredible :) Just as I remembered it from 2004. Sometimes I simply stood there and BREATHED the atmosphere and her voice and the music in, closing my eyes..

I was amazed that there were American and Canadian (and Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Spanish etc etc) fans.. wow! From so far away.

I think he did, at least he seemed interested. Somewhen somebody put him on a chair or something where he was higher and could see better. He was there with his mum&dad :)
(who actually made their way to the front squeezing themselves too ;))

I hope it's true she comes back to Europe in Autumn, I hadn't seen her since 2004 and now I realised how much I missed it. For me music is about feelings and communication and a concert is just THE place where artist and fan can interact. You give and get, you stand /sit with people who are there for the same reason as you, it's the energy.. and there are very few artists who can really get deep to you.

Melissa is so spontaneous.. or at least she seems to improvise a lot, something you don't see THAT often and which makes her a great musician. She also interacts a lot with people in the audience. Her words in between the songs really got me, and it really felt like she WANTED us to feel better, feel who we are, be who we are.
My two other favourite singers (Eva Dahlgren and Marie Fredriksson) are great performers too, in their own way, but it's about the same feeling and THE moment.

Judith,
And hypocrite that I am, of course I checked your link out. I think it is great peeps video (although I never do, ever...) but not at the risk of others. Silly thing is, had the woman asked me she could have had a brilliant view, as I let a young, small person in front of me and there was space for her to get a really good angle.

Your vid is great by the way. Shame you didn't get the water spraying in ...

I think I remember you and hope it wasn't my jumping that put you off. I'm sorry if it did, I do sometimes lose myself a little (as visible in your vid). I'm glad you still had a great concert.

I LOVED the concert. Atmosphere was kinda magical I thought and really intense. Although I think M felt the little gap between us and stage because of barrier, the same way we did. Saying that, I am very glad we weren't right up to that high stage because peeps were pushing way too hard for that. And M still managed to feel us and we felt her at the end :innocent:

She's never been out of my life since. Much has changed but one thing stays the same: the integrity of the person, her loyalty to her beliefs and us; her truth towards and in her music. I am mighty proud to call myself a fan! Thanks Melissa. Here's to the future.
